Jan 1, 2019 - Australian readers: check out a fine alternative in the MacBook Pro. But you're getting the best laptop a college student could ever want. I've heard that they're very good computers with a lot less problems than PCs and that. I'm going to college in the fall and looking into getting a macbook pro. Now imagine the usual student that used their machine on the.
As a college student who travels between home and classes, and have little to no money to afford a MacBook Pro or iMac, should I invest in an iPad 2 and use the pages app for typing things up and using it as almost a laptop? Or should I wait a little longer to afford a Mac mini which will have to remain at my home just so I can use it? I already own an iPhone 4 and I love iOS 5, but I do need a bigger screen for pages, and more memory (I was thinking of a refurbished iPad 2 32GB) so I can store the things I don't want to cram onto my phone. I also do not own a Mac computer at all, and a Mac mini may serve as my first Mac computer. So, iPad 2 for $530 after taxes, or mac mini for $757 (with keyboard and mouse) after taxes? I am a pad guy from day 1, and i love the thing, and use it daily. I am also a dad with 2 kids that went thru college.
The pad is great, but there is no way that it will work as a stand alone computer replacement for what you will need in college. You wil not be doing 3 page book reports and simple spreadsheets. You will be doing a lot more complicated stuff, and you will get frustrated with the inherent limitstions of the pad. The pad is a great accessory, but not a stand alone for a serious user.
I also have a mac mini, and love it. It will do what you need, but of course, it is not at all a portable machine. If a macbook air is out of your budget, bite the bullet and get a functional low end laptop from best buy. It will do what you need and will get you through your college chores. When you do your upgrade in a couple of years, then you will know better what you can afford, and what you need.
Keep in mind that freshman computers are subjected to a lot of unique stress. Spilled beer, pong games, droppage, and from time to time, mysterious dissappearance, none of which would be good for you. The devices is great, but carefully consider what you need, svs what you want. Just my opinion. I am a pad guy from day 1, and i love the thing, and use it daily.
